What is NBME CBSE?
Required by certain Caribbean, Canadian and Dental schools in order to proceed for USMLE Step 1 or apply to OMFS residency, CBSE stands for Comprehensive Basic Science Examination and it is a standardized test given by the National Board of Medical Examiners and has similar contents to USMLE Step 1 exam.
However, because CBSE is made of retired Step 1 questions, the focus of the content is different. If USMLE Step 1 focused on organ systems, CBSE focuses on general principles, which makes it even more “steppier“ than the Step.
Unlike the USMLE, CBSE is not reported on a final exam transcript and hence can be taken several times without any consequences. The passing score of CBSE by NBME is 194, but various schools have a different cutoff to allow to proceed for Step 1 from 185 to 208. A lot of the students pass CBSE and 2nd and 3rd attempt.

Generally speaking:
Made of retired USMLE Step 1 questions NBME CBSE has a different focus rather than Step 1, and for that reason, prep differs significantly.
Even though some students (mostly those who are not required to take CBSE) think taking this exam is “silly”- the truth is, NBME CBSE exam helps you to have a strong foundation for Step 1 and goes a long way to determining your future medical career.
Common misconceptions:
• Uworld is not the best qbank for CBSE. You can definitely pass CBSE by using Uworld, but the amount of energy that you will invest will be disproportionately higher than with CBSE-focused qbanks
• Certain Step 1 practice tests are not predictive of CBSE score
• Doing more questions is not always the best way to increase CBSE score, because most of the times question on this exam is short and more specific
